Dinner at the Inn at Erlowest was a bit of a surprise. Given the distinguished name, the stunning location overlooking Lake George, the imposing exterior and its reputation as a first-class venue for the most distinguished events, dining expectations were high! Although its reputation preceded it, our dinner at this restaurant was nothing short of extraordinary.
Upon our arrival we were greeted warmly and shown to a corner
table in the red dining room, where the historic ambiance and presence of this incredible inn is visible in every detail. From the classic architecture, parquet floors, furnishings and décor, to the warm colors enhanced by the subtle lighting, candlelight and music, the Inn presents like a chapter directly from the Great and the Gracious.
Our server’s name was Paul, who warmly welcomed us, presented the wine list and gave us ample time to make our menu selections. We began with a choice of fresh baked rolls: I chose the classic dinner roll, my partner a fabulous sea salt roll, offered with a choice of rosemary butter, dipping oil or a whipped sweet cream butter.
For an appetizer, I chose the Handmade Angolotti vegetable composition, a ravioli creation deliciously prepared with a mélange of onions, Brussels sprouts and beautifully presented. My dining partner chose the Ragout of Bay Scallops & Mussels, with capers, and lemon thyme, accompanied by a delightful Pinot Gris, Needless to say, nothing that came out of the kitchen returned!
For our main course I opted for the Roasted Pheasant. It was cooked to perfection…served amid delicately earthy and flavorful oyster mushrooms, roasted vegetables and a touch of citrus, and served on a delicious bed of saffron couscous. My partner chose the Duck Confit, a wonderful medley of roasted duck with glazed vegetables and Chinese black garlic.
Dessert is often the defining moment at the end of such a meal…can the last moments be as memorable and delightful the first? In this case, each sweet choice displayed as much forethought and care in preparation as the elegant dinner menu. The Crème Brulee was remarkable…among the best I have ever enjoyed: creamy, silky and smooth, with just a hint of citrus, covered with a perfectly browned, delicate crust. My dining partner’s chocolate mousse was nothing short of decadent, a heady composition of rich chocolate whipped to light perfection.
Although decidedly an elegant and refined dining environment, the Inn at Erlowest has perfected the art of gracious hospitality in the most classic style. Cutlery appeared and was removed as though by magic! Throughout our meal the service was superior and the wait staff accomplished: attentive but unobtrusive, gracious and genuinely warm.
Our dining experience at The Inn at Erlowest: a resounding EEE+...Exquisite, Elegant, Extraordinary.
